hello!

What's New? Sorry that this page is so small and seemingly unactive. I've removed pretty much everything that used to be here except for the kenshin and dbz pages - they're the only ones that are fiarly new. But soon this whole section will be gone. I'm gonna replace it with a page features all of the files that are accessible through our FTP. For more information on the ftp, please visit our message board forum for it. Located Here What's New? As of 8.2.01 ::
Deleted all the old sections. They were full of broken linkes and hadn't been updated in like 2 years anyways. They were just taking up space and looking bad.

As of 1.6.01 ::
Remade and replaced the Rurouni Kenshin and Dragonball Z sections. Also added a small section on the RK OAV series.

Athey's Anime Favorites

These are some of my favorate anime series. It's obviously not all of them, but it's all I could think of at the moment. I actually KNOW that there are a lot more than this... but my dvds are up in the loft, so I don't have reference. They ARE actually in order from most liked to slightly less liked than that ones before it... yeah. I HIGHLY suggest all of these series to anyone who likes anime. I also Highly suggest finding the original japanese version with a good translation for any of these series that have actually been release in the US. For example, CCSakura, DB/Z, and Inu Yasha - I saw all of them via fansubs/HKBootlegs long before they were torn apart by satanic dubbing companies with no deire to sustain the original artistic direction implied by the Japanese directors and voice actors. I've seen one whole episode of Inu Yasha dubbed, and I was so saddened by it's terrible quality when comparred to the original version, that it made me want to hurl. And don't even get my started on DB/Z or CCSakura.... T_T.

Fruits Basket
While watching this anime, I jumped out of my seat laughing and at other times found myself crying - This is THE best anime I've ever seen, in my opinion. And unlike many of the other anime series that I've enjoyed, it had a VERY VERY GOOD ENDING. The last two episodes made me cry so much, but the end was so wonderful and I didn't feel a bit torn by it's end. It was honestly the best anime I've ever seen.

Initial D
So much fun, and Oh So addictive. I had never before actually DESIRED to own a Toyota Corolla from 1984, but this series has made me fall in love with the AE86 Toyota Corolla GT Coupe and everytime I see one on the street, I find myself screaming - HachiRoku! Waii!! I Want a HachiRoku!!

Hikaru no Go
Yes! This IS an anime about a board game! And it is NOT oriental Othello, dammit! XD This one has a twist and the lead character's development through the series is incredable. I REALLY like this one.

Prince of Tennis
Same addictive nature as Initial D and Hikago. I find that I'm strangly drawn to this type of anime. It's all about the character and his godly ability in some strange genre that you NEVER thought you'd care about (Cars? Boxing? Tennis? ...Go?!?)

Hajime no Ippo
I really seem to be into these types of anime, don't I? Yup - this IS an anime about Boxing. But it's not the 'Boxing' that draws you in, it's Ippo - the main character. Just like Takumi for Initial D, Hikaru for HikaGo, Echizen in PoTennis, and the lovable and -Oh-So-Gullable-, Ippo from Hajime no Ippo. Just great characters - you really love these guys and get addicted to their stories.

Hunter X Hunter
Fun. Very fun. XD - plus, I love the art style. It's just fun and cute and I really enjoy this series - I also really wish I could find more of it. -_-

Rurouni Kenshin
Do I really need to explain? I DO have an entire section dedicted to it afterall...

Trigun
If you've seen it, you'd never question this. Some would probably question why I'd have it so low on the list... but when it comes down to it, this series is just TOO short. Funny as all hell breaking loose and a great deep story towards the end... just too short.

Inu Yasha
Inu Yasha was the FIRST manga that I read on a regular basis. I can safely say that reading the Inu Yasha manga translations was what got me really into anime. When I frist heard rumors of an anime I was estatic, and when it first started getting fansubbed I was getting new episodes each week as they came out. I love this anime and I am really very saddened by the poor job that was done in casting voice talent for the dub. -_-

Hack//Sign
It's just too cool to describe. Also too short and I, unfortunetly, havn't been able to find enough of it.

Card Captor Sakura
I've loved CLAMP since I first heard of them. X was one of those early manga reads I took up collecting so I started looking into their other stuff (no matter how different) and started getting it fansubbed. Right now I've got about half of CCS on DVD via the wonderful people of Hong Kong and their plentiful booklegging industry.

Rockman EXE
Who doesn't like Rockman/Megaman?

Digi Charat
Disturbingly cute and twisted.

FLCL / Furi Kuri
So freaking weird it just kicks serious butt. Made by the same psychopaths responsible for Evangelion, only with more twisted humor and less strange silence and reused animation... Also way too short.

X TV
As stated above, aside from Inu Yasha, collecting issues of X in Animerica Extra was one of the first anime related hobbys I took up. Love the manga, and enjoy the anime as well.

I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs!
This is just a cute, fun, and enjoyable series with no strings attached. I was able to sit down and enjoy it all the way through the 13 well-ended, episodes. It didn't leave me hanging, it had a good conclusion and I liked it.

Final Fantasy Unlimited
Come on... who wouldn't like an anime that cracked a pun/word joke about a chocolate bar and a chocobo? And the summons! It's fun! And the characters are cute ^_^

Dragon Ball / Z
This was the first anime I got imported. It's what got me into the fansub world and made me realize that there was so much more anime outside of the american released dubs. I would be the last person to call it perfect, but I truely enjoyed this anime a lot and think it was done pretty well for it's time. I just suggest avoiding the dub all together and finding it on DVD from Hong Kong or perhaps the *cough* "unedited" dvd releases in America.... right.... Shuuuuure. unedited. I really believe that. *cough*

Gravitation
I'm a girl - I'm allowed to have my girly fun every now and then XD hehe - This is the funniest shounen-ai anime I have ever seen. Lots of fun.

Generator Gawl
This anime is TOTALLY not respected enough. I really liked it... maybe I'm just weird.

Japanese

Nihongo

Most Anime fans (at least the ones who watch lots of subtitled anime) are at some point or another, interested in learning some Japanese. At least, most of the one's I've known were like that. I've taken a year of College Japanese, as well as having been watching subbed anime for many years so I figured I'd post a few simple things about the language on baka neko.

You can read up on it, here:

FanSubs
I know this looks long, but if you don't know what a fan sub is, this is really useful.

One thing that you should know about, if you're a new fan to anime, is fan subs. They're the best way to get a hold of some of the best anime series and at a resonable price. Unfortunetly you can only get stuff on fan subs that havn't begun selling commercially in the US (or where ever you live). If a fan sub distributor sells episodes of a series that is being released commercially, then it becomes illegal.

Anyways, in case you dont know, a fan sub is a tape (usually with four episodes on it) of an original Japanese anime series with english subtitles. These are made by really intelligent fans who fluently speak both english and japanese and have the equipment to add the subtitles. It takes a lot of time and effort, and we, as fans, should be very grateful to these spiffy people for doing us such a big favor. ^_^ You see - what I like best about fan subs is that (compared to the commercially sold tapes) they are rather cheap. Three tapes with four episodes each usually costs from $15 to $25 (depending on the distributor and the types of tapes you get). Commercial tapes are usually around $30 for one tape with 2 eps on it! >:(~

While it isn't that hard to find fan sub distributors with the series you want, it is a process that you should take seriously. You need to find a message board, or a newsgroup and ask people about the different fan sub distributors. Find some people who have shopped there before so that you can make sure that they are trust worthy. You never know when someone is trying to rip you off. And you can never be too careful when dealing over the internet.

Usually they only accept money orders (they have to be careful too, you know) since checks take too long to clear. And they don't send you the tapes (and most don't even record them for you) until they're recieved the money. Thus it usually takes about a month (or longer) for the tapes to get to you.

I've bought fan subs before, from at least two different distributors, and a few of my friends have also bought them. I, personally, am a huge dragon ball Z fan. And that is mostly what I buy, along with Rurouni Kenshin. So if you're looking for Fushigi Yuugi fan subs don't come asking me where to get them.. in fact I don't think you can get those anymore - Fushigi Yuugi is being released commercially now. Okay - better example, if you're looking for Escaflowne fan subs... Ack! you can't get those anymore either... hmmmm.... I know! Vampire Princess Miyu. You can still get that on fansub. Okay, if you're looking for Miyu don't come asking me, since all the distributors that I go through only have mostly DBZ. But there are tons of other people out there who do know good places to get them. You just need to find them!

But even if you're not looking for Dragon Ball eps, you can still e-mail me and ask my advice on ordering. I know it can seem a little awkward ordering things like this the first time around. You're never quite sure what exactly you're supposed to be doing.

One hint before you move on in this site though - if you want your fan subs to get to you as soon as possible, most distributors have a *priority* list. In other words, if you give them a few extra $'s they'll do you before those who didn't give them a few extra. Hey, money talks!

Rumiko Takahashi
Rumiko Takahashi was born in 1957 in Niigato Japan. She attended a women's college in Tokyo where she began studying comics with Kozuo Koike, the author of Crying Freman.

In 1978, Takahashi won a prize in Shogakukan's annual "New Comic Artist Contest." In that same year, her series Lum (Urusei Yatsura) began appearing in the weekly manga magazine Shonen Sunday. This Phenomenally succesful series ran for nine years and would eventually go on to sell 22 million coppies.

Ranme 1/2 has proven even more succesful with fans coming from all ages and backgrounds, the series enjoys one of the most diverse readerships in all of comics. Other titles by Takahashi include the ongoing Mermaid Saga (Mermaids Forest, Mermaid's Scar and Mermaid's Promise), One-Pound Gospel, Maison Ikkoku and most recently Inu-Yasha (my personal favorite). ^_^

She is definetly one of the best manga creators out there. In both story telling, great characters, and terrific art.

CLAMP

Since it's debut in Japan with RG Veda the artist group known as CLAMP has been a sensation like no other. With it's members unique style and story-telling ability, it has made a significant impact on both the manga and anime worlds. This ambitious group has bentured into all genre of manga and expanded in to all areas of the entertainment media.
I ABSOLUTELY adore CLAMP's work. And plan to add a section to this page for X/1999 (as soon as I get some of the other sections finished ^_^ Gomen!). Two of the sections already found on this part were originally created by CLAMP, RG Veda and Magic Knight Rayearth. The art style of these four magnificent women has always caught my eye and I have always been drawn to it. After getting interested in their work by the awesome look of their art - I was soon amazed by the incredably intricate and creative plots and story twists. In general, CLAMP's stories are known for their tendency to turn the screws and torture the heroes. CLAMP isn't afraid to kill off their main characters to further the plot.
For the sake of a prophecy, most of the heroes seem fated to die in RG Veda. In Rayearth, the true reason for the heroines' summons to an alternate world is a sorrowful task they had never imagined. But despite the pain, both of the stories have a bittersweet ending. However, Sabura, the main character of Tokyo Babylon, is doomed to a far more ominous fate. By taking the plots to such torturous and tragic lengths, CLAMP gives their stories an epic quality that is unusual for the genre.
